Clip It — Privacy Policy
The short version: Clip It does not collect, store, or upload any personal information, and it does not upload your screen recordings anywhere. There are no accounts and no analytics. Everything — the rolling buffer and every clip you save — stays on your device.
Who we are
Clip It is a screen-clip recorder for Android, developed and published by NorthForge Dev. You can reach us at northforgedev.io@gmail.com.
What Clip It records
Clip It records your device's screen and, if you enable it, audio (app/game sound and/or your microphone) into a short rolling buffer held in the app's private cache while it's armed. Nothing is saved permanently until you tap Save (via the in-app button, the floating bubble, the notification action, or — if you enable it — the voice trigger). Saved clips are written to Movies/ClipIt on your device via Android's standard MediaStore and are visible like any other video you record.
None of this — the rolling buffer or your saved clips — is ever transmitted to us, to a server we control, or to any third party. Clip It has no backend of its own.
Microphone and voice trigger
The microphone is off by default and only used if you turn it on, for two independent, optional purposes:
- Including your commentary in the audio track of saved clips.
- Voice trigger — saying "clip it" or "clip that" to save a clip hands-free. This uses Android's built-in on-device speech recognizer (available on Android 12 and newer): recognition happens entirely on your device, and no audio is sent anywhere for this feature, including to Google. It is off by default and requires you to opt in.
Permissions
Clip It requests the following Android permissions, each tied to a feature you control:
- Screen recording (MediaProjection) — required for the core clipping feature. Android shows its own consent dialog every time you arm; this can't be skipped or bypassed by any app.
- Microphone — only if you enable audio commentary or the voice trigger.
- Display over other apps — only if you enable the floating save bubble.
- Notifications — used for the persistent "buffering" notification (with Save/Stop actions) required while a foreground service is capturing, and for occasional status messages (e.g. low storage, or capture stopping unexpectedly).
Clip It does not request access to your contacts, location, files outside its own clips, or any other sensitive data.
DRM and protected content
Some apps opt out of screen or audio capture, and DRM-protected video is never delivered to any app, including Clip It — in those cases the clip shows black video or silent audio instead of an error. This is an Android platform restriction, not a Clip It bug.
Children's privacy
Clip It collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If Clip It's data practices ever change — for example, when ads or in-app purchases are introduced — this policy will be updated before that version ships, and the effective date above will change.
